How to Make a Paper Plate Twister
Let students make their very own twister to hang from the ceiling. This activity takes approximately 20 minutes.
Materials:
- inexpensive paper plates
- scissors
- hole punch
- six-inch pieces of yarn
Directions:
- Have students cut a one-half inch section into the edge of their paper plate and continue cutting around and around in a circular pattern until they reach the center and their whole paper plate is one long spiral. *It is best to have a few pre-made for demonstration and to have extra paper plates on hand in case students make a mistake.
- Using a hole punch, put a hole on the very outside edge of their spiral. This is where they made their first cut.
- Pull a six-inch piece of yarn through the hole and tie into a knot so that the twister can be hung from the ceiling.
Optional: Have students write a "twister poem" on the spiral. Then color the spiral with crayons and markers and glitter.
